One of my favourite things to do is to explore and find different rock formations that we have here in Broome and surrounds. I was doing just that when I saw this incredible rock sticking up with hues of pink, purple, red, orange and yellow running through it; creating the most spectacular patterns. It was already a work of art (mother nature’s art), and I was so drawn to it that I went home, got my painting materials and a few small canvas’ and returned to the spot to paint it. I sat in front of the large rock that was about 2 metres high from the ground and spent a couple hours doing some quick ‘study paintings’. My goal was to capture the patterns and colours more freely without focusing too much on the finer details whilst also allowing the feeling of painting outdoors to inspire and guide me. I then decided to do a larger scale version of it because I was so moved by the process of outdoor painting already and couldn’t get enough of the beautiful rock. Layers of Reddell’ is a painting that highlights the uniqueness of mother nature through my own artistic expression. I focused on emphasising both the little details that were seen running through it as well as the colours.
